For several years now I’ve been friends with Charl van Rensburg. Charl is different from most of my other friends in that he does not kayak, windsurf, surf or bodyboard, he riverboards - also known as hydrospeeding. The definition from the Wiki is as follows, “Riverboarding is a boardsport in which the participant lies prone on their board with fins on their feet for propulsion and steering.” On the 22nd of July this year we had a great level on the Witte River here in the Western Cape province of South Africa and although I had been down rivers with Charl before, we had not done the Witte together.

The Doring is always one of my favourite trips, so when the opportunity came by to paddle it I jumped at it. Granted it was a little low, and we were only doing the last 25/30km, but a night out under the stars with a kayak is just perfect for me!

It’s 06:00 on a Saturday and here I am writing this quickly. I know, I’ve been a bit lax lately with my writing and article posting and promise I’ll make up soon. Life has been a bit hectic lately with a lot of other activities and missions needing attention, including the big dreaded word - work. This day out on the Palmiet was done last season and didn’t stand out as anything spectacular but thought I’m mumble a few words and throw up some photos as the photos are really what are important, I think.

Ok, so I admit, I paddled this last year, but time has gotten the better of me and what else was I supposed to post during the dry times?! So here we go, yet another Witte River article. This season I’ll try different angles and rapids, as even I’m getting bored of the same positions – no doubt you are :-) Or maybe I should take a cup of concrete and go and run it when it’s really high. Either way I suspect I’ll be getting some fresh stuff onto my site this season from another country if all goes well so bear with me here.

I won’t even begin another article by complaining about the lack of water, so I’ll just state again that this season sucked - thank you climate change. Let me also state that this November was probably the chilliest I’ve experienced since moving to Cape Town in 2008 and today is the 11th of December and I’m wearing a jersey, and yes, it even rained this morning. Our weather has definitely gone bonkers… It should be hot, very windy, and dry as hell. At least I’ve managed a few blistering windsurfing sessions so far, with waves to boot. Right, moving on.
