Deepdale Gorge – Day 1 – Deepdale Falls Hucked!

Saturday, 22 November 2008 and I was up at 05:15 already. A small olive thrush (bird) sat on the window next to me and pecked his beak repeatedly against the glass. He would fly away and tap on another window and then come back again and tap, tap, tap. It was most peculiar and instead of fight my new found avian friend, I just got up and started the day. No one else was up and I quietly made my way to the water’s edge. The river had dropped overnight already but it was still higher than when I had first paddled this section. I knew it was going to be guaranteed to be a good trip. Deepdale Gorge is one of my favourite sections and is always just great fun!

A Scouting Mission...

Friday, 21 November 2008. This day would be an interesting one of exploration as well as frustration. Luke and I awoke to cloudy, but warm skies. The air was already warm and slightly humid and the camp site was deserted bar one other tent. There were no mechanical sounds to be heard, only the peaceful hum of the nature around us. This was exactly the type of place I could perpetually sit at, and just exist. I basked in the rapidly building heat and thought back to the previous days’ mission, and of the drive into the camp. We were lucky to see several small antelope as well as a massive spiral-horned antelope known as Eland, truly majestic creatures. As these thoughts drifted away they were quickly replaced with what the present day would bring. Day 2 of the trip had already started at 06:00am – it was Thursday 20 November 2008.

The Injusuthi River – Interesting Start to the Trip

This is the first article of a series of nine articles on a road trip I did last year with Luke Longridge in my own country, South Africa. Too often we rush off to some distant place only to forget that adventure is just down the road. Well, at least in South Africa it is. I am truly lucky to live in this wonderful country! After these articles you might agree. Stay tuned.
