Blyde X-Fest 2007

To hold an extreme kayak race in the world’s third largest canyon is quite something. To be privilege to this is something I just could not miss. Even though water levels were low, because of the drought, the canyon provided us with enough water to hold a successful event.

The Steelpoort (low level)

We had had some thunderstorms here and there. Reports were looking alright for something nearby when I received the phone call asking if I would want to paddle the Steelpoort. The steel what? Oh yes, I had heard of it somewhere along the line. A tributary to the Olifants river. The Steelpoort looked long on the map and I wondered where we would be putting in. I had my doubts over this river, the only thing convincing me was that I was told the section was long, continuous and at one rapid someone on a previous trip had to be bagged out of a bad hole. Hmmm, that sold me. Brendan Bosman picked me up at 04:15 Saturday morning and away we went.

A winter trip on the Upper Sabie

 

On the weekend of the 6th of August 2006 a group of rain starved paddlers gathered in the Sabie Valley in search of some fun. With almost no rain for a while now most of us were feeling pretty desperate and definitely showing withdrawal symptoms. The Sabie was low but still had enough water to satisfy the craving. At least for a little while.

Mpumalanga

The province of Mpumalanga holds a few surprises for the majority of paddlers. I have compiled a few pictures together of the rivers from this beautiful area for your enjoyment. The rivers featured are the Crocodile, the Sabie and the Mac-Mac. Of course there are many other rivers available and these are only a taste.

Olifants River

Good Friday. I wondered if it would live up to it’s name as I struggled out of bed at five in the morning. The plan had been to paddle the Olifants River in the province of Mpumalanga. This was Thursday. The plan then changed to paddling the Wilge. Joe Carter and I would be meeting Grant at his house at six. On arrival at Morsies house we soon learned that we would indeed be paddling the Olifants.
