Earlier this season, before the rain started, there was a lovely day with zero wind and some swell. I’d been wondering how my large Fluid Detox would surf in the ocean and decided I’d take it out for a test.

Shortly before attending the festival at the Palmiet River, Justin Abrams and I decided to camp out at Yzerfontein for a few nights and score some waves. This sleepy little town about a hundred kilometres north of Cape Town can produce some fun waves in the right conditions. The wind is always lighter here than the mother city and if Cape Town is blowing 45/50 knots then the windsurfers often drive up here where one would typically sail a full square metre larger than further south on a given day.

Alrighty! I’ve got a few minutes spare while sitting in northern Zambia at the moment and thought I’d quickly post this article of two sessions I had at Melkbosstrand’s Tubewave. The water shots were by fellow Team Fluid paddler Craig Rivett and the land based shots courtesy my old man, Trevor. Thanks guys!

I’d been checking out Haakgat for quite a while. When it gets big and there is SE wind blowing a couple of windsurfers and kiters hit that spot and ride the left that runs just next to a patch of reef. The launch has some shore break but it’s manageable if you time it right. Once out it isn’t too hard to get to the backline, on a given day. Many times I had stood there and checked it out. No wind, but closing out right across and no ways of getting to the backline – damn. On another day, it just wouldn’t be happening, or a NW wind would totally ruin it, or too much SE wind. Or the tide would be wrong and the evil kelp would be sticking out, waiting to cane the unsuspecting kayaker. Until July this year.

It’s Sunday 12 September 2010. I’m sitting at my laptop with my cat Cameo, on my lap. To my right the curtains are open and I can peer out to a cobalt blue sky with the mountains beaming out from a slight haze in the distance. The chimney cap is squeaking in the moderate south east wind which is blowing. It’s not good enough for me to go windsurfing so today I won’t be going out anywhere, but just chilling at home. This isn’t a bad thing as yesterday was just so good, so I’m just reflecting. Usually my articles come out weeks or months after the events but today I just felt like sharing this one right now.
