Last year, 27 August 2009, I hit a Thursday afternoon session at Melkbosstrand, a beach just to the north of Cape Town and managed to get my dad to take some photos of me. It was actually quite busy with loads of surfers and bodyboarders but I managed to get a few waves in between all the madness and of course a few photos. The waves were actually better than what is shown here but it was tough to snake something out, as it often is when it gets very busy. Check it out.

Just before Christmas I received my composite Element. As can be imagined, I was chomping at the bit to get this thing in the water! Although the wait was long for this one, I managed to try out Andrew Pollock’s composite one a week before I got mine as he was staying with me for just over a week. Although the waves refused to cooperate we made the best of some bad situations and managed to get a few photos and had a great time doing it. I’ll let the photos and their accompanying captions do the talking.

Cape Town has an outstanding number of spots with high quality waves - in fact it has some world class spots. No matter what the wind and swell are doing, you are almost always guaranteed to find something, as long as you are prepared to drive. Of course, some of the spots are for the hardcore only. This guide is aimed mainly at surf kayakers and mainly beach breaks, although I have included a few more serious spots as well.

On 5 September 2009 a special day occurred in Cape Town. We had decent swell and zero wind. What an absolute pleasure. While Cape Town gets some monstrous swell, producing world class waves, we are often plagued by either the powerful south east trade wind in summer, or else the sometimes weaker but shiftier north west wind. But on this fine morning we had nothing, the sea was glassy.
