Olifants River – Close Crocodile Encounter

Neil and I woke up at 06:00 at Karl’s house. It was a warm, clear morning and the scene was set for a super relaxing day. We weren’t certain on the water levels but knew that it would be dropping. With some luck we’d have a good level. Only one way to find out and that was to take the short drive from Witbank down to the magnificent Kingdom Farm.

Steelpoort – Epic in Flood!

It had been raining for a few days already. The unusually overcast and miserable weather had been taking its toll on most people. We are not accustomed to such horrible weather for so long in South Africa. So it’s fair to say that when most people were wondering what had happened to the sun, we kayakers were wondering what was happening in the river valleys.

Upper Sabie & Blyde – a long weekend

 

With the drought in South Africa still hanging over our heads and the fact that winter was encroaching, water was fairly scarce. Friday and Tuesday were public holidays so all that was needed was to knock off a Monday and then voila, an extra long weekend. Our mission was to hit two sections on the Upper Sabie and also the Upper Blyde. We were not to be disappointed.

Olifants – how low is too low?

 

Well, we were desperate for a paddle and decided to try out the Olifants to see exactly how low, was too low. Karl and I were soon to find out.

 

Leaving early on Saturday morning, Cheri and I took a speedy drive down to Witbank to meet up with Karl and Pam. I can’t remember the exact time but we arrived pretty early and made our way to the Kingdom Farm. A truly beautiful place and a few thousand hectares large, this conservation area is aimed mainly for hikers. There is ample game and the setting is unbelievable. Who would believe you could be in such beauty so close to Witbank?!

Montrose Falls – Park and Huck

 

With the extreme race during the Blyde Festival on the Saturday being over and done with, we decided to check out Montrose Falls. It would mean a slight detour but we had the whole day and weren’t in a hurry. Paul Hay had told us that the dam was releasing water for the farmers so we were in luck, big time!
