Buffalo River – February 2007

Friday the 9th, what a crazy day. Originally there were fifteen paddlers, six drivers and as many 4x4 vehicles all ready to go off to Lesotho for a trip on the Malibamatsu River. On Thursday evening, all plans changed due to the low water levels. Phone calls between people revealed only depressed voices and a severe lack of enthusiasm. The Bivane River

A fairly unknown river just south of Swaziland, this beauty was un-run until only a few years ago. The section described below is from the wall at the Paris Dam, entering the beautiful Itala Nature Reserve and then joining the larger Pongola River. DEEPDALE GORGE AT LOW WATER

Friday afternoon, the usual traffic out of Johannesburg. Carl van Wyk and I are joining a couple hundred other motorists on our quest to Natal. Here we are greeted with cold beers from Mike Pennefather and return the favour with a bottle of brandy fresh from Benoni!
